Narrow alley with carved wooden doors in Stone Town, Zanzibar

West coast

Stone Town

The UNESCO-listed old town: carved doors, spice markets, Swahili history and the best sunsets on the island.

Stone Town is the historical heart of Zanzibar and the arrival point for almost every visitor. Its coral-stone alleys were laid out for shade and defence, which is why they feel like a maze.

Spend at least one afternoon walking it with a guide, then stay for the Forodhani night food market on the seafront.
