Water excursions

Experience one of Zanzibar’s most important coastal traditions with a visit to a local seaweed farming community. This fascinating excursion offers a glimpse into the daily lives of local farmers and reveals how seaweed cultivation supports families and contributes to the island’s coastal economy. Seaweed farming takes place in shallow, sheltered waters with sandy seabeds, particularly along parts of Zanzibar’s eastern coast, including Pwani Mchangani, Bwejuu, Jambiani, Michamvi, and Uroa. Introduced to Zanzibar in 1988, seaweed cultivation has developed into an important local industry, providing income and employment for hundreds of island residents, especially women. During your visit, learn how farmers establish their plots using wooden stakes and ropes arranged in shallow seawater. Discover how farmers attach young seaweed cuttings to the ropes, cultivate them carefully, and harvest them as they mature. You will also learn about the drying process and how the harvested seaweed enters the local and international markets. Depending on the tides and farming schedules, you may have the opportunity to observe farmers at work and gain a deeper appreciation of the knowledge, patience, and dedication involved in this traditional livelihood. More than a sightseeing excursion, this experience offers a meaningful connection with Zanzibar’s coastal communities and an opportunity to understand the relationship between local people, the ocean, and sustainable livelihoods.
